BECOME A HOST HOUSE

The Tour of Newport News is looking for host houses within the city for next year’s edition, which is scheduled to take place on April 10-12, 2026.

What is the Tour of Newport News?

The Tour of Newport News is the Mid-Atlantics largest amateur and professional bicycle race. The event consists of 4 different races over 3 days that take place throughout the city. These four events include the Todd Stadium Points Race, Crawford Road Time Trial, Newport News Twilight Criterium, and Fort Eustis Circuit Race. Last year the event saw over 2,000 registrations, with riders traveling from as far as California, Canada, and Colombia.

What does it mean to be a host house and why do you need them?

To be a host house means opening your home to out of town riders and teams that lack the financial resources to afford hotels and short-term rental housing. Cycling, especially bicycle racing is an expensive sport to participate in; by lowering the financial barrier to entry it allows more people from different socioeconomic backgrounds to participate. That is where host houses and host families come in, by being able to offer free housing to these riders we can open more opportunities for them. Another benefit to having more riders come to Newport News is the economic benefit of additional tourism. We work closely with the City of Newport News to make this an exciting and inviting event that both riders and spectators want to be apart of and by eliminating their housing costs it allows them to have more money to spend within our local economy.

What are the expectations and responsibilities for host houses?

The responsibilities of a host house are minimal. Riders generally just need a place to sleep and store their bicycles and gear every night. Because of the format of this event, the riders are at the various race venues for most of the weekend. While some host families will choose to cook meals or provide other extra amenities, that is not an expectation or responsibility for a host house. Riders often bring their own air mattresses so they generally do not need a bed.

How many riders need accommodations?

Host housing is prioritized for the Men’s and Women’s Elite teams, amateur women’s teams, and those who’s participation in the event would not be possible without no cost housing. As the event has grown so has the need for more host houses. Our goal is to have a network of 40 host houses for 2025 so that both riders and host families are comfortable in their accommodations. Some teams will have as many as 10 riders that need a place to stay, which means multiple host houses are needed, preferably in close proximity for ease of team communication and logistics. Teams and riders are matched to host houses based on their rider count to ensure that they are a good fit.

When are host houses needed?

Host houses are needed from Thursday, April 9th to Sunday, April 12th. The Tour of Newport News kicks off on that Thursday evening with an early packet pickup and social gathering at Costal Fermentory. Out of town riders will be arriving in Newport News sometime Thursday. The final event of the weekend is that Sunday and it ends at 3 PM. Riders will typically pack everything up and clear out from a host house the morning of the last event so they can leave straight from the event. Some teams will choose to arrive on Friday, April 11th, so they would only need accommodations for Friday night-Sunday morning. We can match teams based on host house availability a well.

How does the process of assigning teams to host houses work?

Interested host houses can reach out to us via email at racedirector@tourofnewportnews.com or through the event website tourofnewportnews.com. The website has a section labeled “Get Involved” with a page named “Become a Host House.” There is a form on that page that you can fill out that gives us all of the necessary information to add you to the host house network. Also on that page is a form for teams looking for host housing to fill out. We take the various team’s information and match them to a host house that fit their needs. After we match a team with a host we will send a group email out to introduce the team contact to the homeowner. All further communication and planning is done directly between the team contact and host.
